Controlling droplet deposition with surfactants

چکیده
Surfactants are often added to sprays improve spray deposition. We show how the dynamic surface tension of surfactants solutions can be evaluated from drop impact experiments, allowing for a better understanding deposition in presence surfactants.

Surfactants from the gas phase may promote cloud droplet formation.
Clouds, a key component of the climate system, form when water vapor condenses upon atmospheric particulates termed cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Variations in CCN concentrations can profoundly impact cloud properties, with important effects on local and global climate. Organic matter constitutes a significant fraction of tropospheric aerosol mass, and can influence CCN activity by depressin...
متن کاملSurfactants in cloud droplet activation: mixed organic-inorganic particles
Organic compounds with surfactant properties are commonly found in atmospheric aerosol particles. Surface activity can significantly influence the cloud droplet forming ability of these particles. We have studied the cloud droplet formation by two-component particles comprising one of the organic surfactants sodium octanoate, sodium decanoate, sodium dodecanoate, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, mix...
متن کاملElectrospray droplet sources for thin film deposition
Electrospraying utilises electrical forces for liquid atomisation. Droplets obtained by this method are highly charged to a fraction of the Rayleigh limit. The advantage of electrospraying is that the droplets can be extremely small, down to the order of 10’s nanometres, and the charge and size of the droplets can be controlled to some extent be electrical means. Motion of the charged droplets ...
متن کاملEnhancing droplet deposition through in-situ precipitation
Retention of agricultural sprays on plant surfaces is an important challenge. Bouncing of sprayed pesticide droplets from leaves is a major source of soil and groundwater pollution and pesticide overuse. Here we report a method to increase droplet deposition through in-situ formation of hydrophilic surface defects that can arrest droplets during impact. Defects are created by simultaneously spr...
متن کاملOptimizing cell viability in droplet-based cell deposition
Biofabrication commonly involves the use of liquid droplets to transport cells to the printed structure. However, the viability of the cells after impact is poorly controlled and understood, hampering applications including cell spraying, inkjet bioprinting, and laser-assisted cell transfer. Here, we present an analytical model describing the cell viability after impact as a function of the cel...
